Captain Zen was once a notorious pirate captain of his ship, the Soul's Wake.

One night, on a quest for treasure, Zen set sail for an artifact known as The Mariner's Bell. On his journey to find the bell, his ship along with his crew were caught in a hurricane that wiped out everyone onboard the Soul's Wake.

Eventually, he woke up in Davy Jones' Locker, greeted by the devil himself. Upon the meeting, Zen began to beg Davy Jones for his life back.
Jones, recognizing Zen as the infamous pirate that he was, offered him a choice. He would bring Zen back to the land on the living on one condition:

"I will bring you back if you take on the task of collecting the souls of those lost at sea and deliver them to me."

Desperate to return to the living, Captain Zen agreed.

Jones bestowed upon Zen the Mariner's Bell, instructing him to ring it once to gather nearby souls lost at sea, and again to collect them.

Now, the Cursed Captain Zen sails the seven seas upon the resurrected Soul's Wake. With the Mariner's Bell in hand, the captain would travel the seas, ringing the bell to bring in the souls lost at sea, so he could then deliver them to Davy Jones.
